Will Champion's Day Off

Will glanced out the window.

It was raining again.

He shut the curtains to block out the awful sight of the stormy grey clouds looming ominously above.

What was there for him to do?

He wondered to himself how the garden was doing. Such a rainy year, even more so than usual. He hoped it hadn't been ruined.

The lights flickered a little as the rain pelted harder. Thunder would come soon, and maybe the power would go out. Then there would be nothing to do.

The kitchen was dark, pitch black even though it was only four in the afternoon. Will often thought of moving elsewhere, to a place where the sun actually existed. He had enough money.

Somewhere tropical would be nice. The sun, the trees, maybe even the ocean.

But he had a life here. Friends he talked to all the time, a job he loved to pieces. He couldn't leave it.

The rain died down, only to make room for the thunder. A flash of light, a dull roar, and Will knew it was time.

The candles were on the mantelpiece, but that was all the way across the room. If the power went out, he wouldn't be able to see well enough to make it. The power was going to go out.

He didn't light them; it would have been a waste. He set them down beside him and picked up the book he was reading. In truth, he hadn't even so much as looked at it in weeks. It hadn't held his interest and he'd been busy. They were going to release an album soon.

The one day he had off, it rained.

Chris was no doubt in the studio anyway. He was always in there, keeping himself busy and distracted from his obvious relationship troubles, venting his frustration through melodic therapy. Will shook his head. If only he would just admit that he's in love with Jonny. Of course, maybe then they wouldn't make such good music. After all, people go nuts for that sad, sappy stuff.

The thunder seemed to stop. Will wasn't taking any chances, though.

The phone rang. Will didn't really feel like answering it. It rang again. He still didn't feel like answering it, but he also didn't feel like hearing it ring a third time.

“Hey, Will. What are you up to?”

“Nothing. The rain is killing me.”

“Ha, I hear ya, man. Hey, wanna come over and play some PS2? I have... uh, San Andreas. That's a great game.”

“That's not two-player... except for those two-player parts... I guess. It beats sitting and listening to the rain, anyway.”

“Cool. See you soon, then.”

“Yeah, bye.”

Will looked around for a jacket. It was still raining, and he obviously didn't want to get wet.

Going over to Jonny's to play video games. Maybe he could convince Jonny to admit that he was in love with Chris. That might go over better.

Playing video games- what was he, 15? Hey, man, you know that Chris kid in our history class? Do you think he's cute? Oh, you should ask him out.

If those two had gotten together when they were 15, life would have been so much easier for everyone. But different. Will wasn't sure that would be so good. Maybe then he wouldn't have enough money. Hopefully he'd still have the friends, at least, if not a job he loved.

Then again, maybe life wasn't meant to be easy. Maybe the rain wasn't meant to stop. Maybe no one would really ever have a day off.
